The result marked Mexico's second historical win over Australia. The previous one occurred 22 years ago with a 2-0 scoreline in another friendly match. The team coached by Pedro López maintained a solid defensive setup against the Matildas, who featured players such as Sam Kerr, Mary Fowler and Caitlin Foord. The match was part of preparations for the qualifying process for the 2027 Women's World Cup in Brazil. The teams will meet again on June 9, 2026 at 03:00 hours at CommBank Stadium in Sydney.
