The Michael Jackson biopic Michael has officially become the highest-grossing music biopic of all time after earning $911.9 million worldwide. It edges past the 2018 Freddie Mercury film Bohemian Rhapsody, which grossed $910 million.
Lionsgate confirmed the figures to multiple outlets on June 13. The movie earned $358 million domestically and $553 million internationally, excluding the most recent weekend receipts.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua, Michael stars Jaafar Jackson as the singer and covers his early years with the Jackson 5 through the 1988 Bad World Tour. The film opened in April and received a recent release in Japan.
A sequel is moving forward, according to Lionsgate chairman Adam Fogelson. The production faced reshoots after legal restrictions prevented depiction of certain allegations against Jackson.
The release has driven increased streams for Jackson’s catalog, with Thriller reaching number seven on the Billboard 200.
