Montclair brewery launches beer tribute to Patrice Lumumba

Montclair Brewery in New Jersey has released Lumumba Smoked Ale as part of its annual Black History Month series, honoring the Congolese leader Patrice Lumumba. The beer draws inspiration from a fan's tribute at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. A second beer honoring baseball pioneer Larry Doby is planned for later this month.

Montclair Brewery, a family-owned microbrewery and tasting room in Montclair, New Jersey, recently launched Lumumba Smoked Ale, the latest addition to its annual Black History Month Beer Series. The beer features a smooth malt profile layered with a refined smoky character, providing a distinctive yet approachable drinking experience.

The ale pays tribute to Patrice Lumumba, the Congolese nationalist leader recognized for his role in ending colonial rule in the Democratic Republic of Congo. According to co-owners Leo and Denise Ford Sawadogo, the decision to honor Lumumba stemmed from renewed global attention during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations tournament. A devoted Congolese supporter, Michel Nkuka Mboladinga, gained international recognition by attending Congo's matches dressed as Lumumba and striking a frozen pose throughout the games.

"The symbolic tribute sparked widespread media coverage and helped bring Lumumba’s historical significance back into global conversation," the Sawadogos explained. The beer can label includes a photo of the well-known Lumumba statue in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and a small photo of Mboladinga.

Leo Sawadogo, the head brewer and a former football player, coach, and lifelong fan of the tournament, described the fan's gesture as incredibly moving. "Lumumba represents courage, leadership, and the pursuit of independence—values that deserve continued recognition," he said. "Creating this beer was our way of honoring that legacy while sharing an important story with our community."

Later in February 2026, the brewery plans to release Limited Edition Doby Caramel Pale Ale, honoring Larry Doby, the baseball icon and former Montclair resident who became the second Black player to break baseball's color barrier. This American pale ale offers pine and citrus hop flavors with toasty notes of caramel.

Both beers are available in the Montclair Brewery taproom and at select distributors and retail partners while supplies last, in cans and on draught. The brewery is also hosting events throughout Black History Month, including live performances by musicians connected to the African diaspora and an art exhibition featuring works by Sydnei Smith Jordan in the taproom. Details are available at www.montclairbrewery.com.
