Ndou encourages parties to reconsider joining GNU

Political analyst Dr. Levy Ndou has urged parties that rejected the Government of National Unity (GNU) to rethink their stance. He highlighted potential voter backlash and benefits of broader inclusion, amid the EFF's Gauteng leader being appointed Finance MEC.

Dr. Levy Ndou, a political analyst, believes parties such as the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and Umkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) should reconsider declining GNU membership. "When an opportunity presents itself for any party to be in government and such parties reject the offers, that could be interpreted differently by their constituencies," Ndou said, warning that voters might feel betrayed.

The EFF had previously insisted on excluding the Democratic Alliance (DA) from the GNU. However, Nkululeko Dunga, EFF Gauteng chairperson, was recently appointed Finance MEC in the province, prompting speculation about shifting positions.

Ndou argued that including these parties would extend representation to those with significant voter support and demonstrate cooperation. "It will be an indication that parties could still be able to cooperate, work together and actively participate in building South Africa," he added.

ANC Deputy President Paul Mashatile supported this view, stating the ANC remains open to collaboration. "We will work with all parties that are committed to serve South Africa and we will not discriminate," Mashatile said, recalling prior invitations to EFF and MKP.

The ANC Veterans League, however, criticized Dunga's appointment, citing his alleged poor financial performance as Finance MMC in the City of Ekurhuleni.

Candidates for DA federal leadership, including Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis and Sedibeng caucus leader Sibusiso Dyonase, delivered passionate speeches to more than 2,000 party members in Midrand, Johannesburg, at the Federal Congress on April 11. The new leadership is expected to steer the party into its next chapter after John Steenhuisen announced he would not seek re-election. Voting for leadership positions takes place on Sunday.

African National Congress deputy president Paul Mashatile has reaffirmed the party's openness to working with formations like the EFF and MKP in the government of national unity. He made the remarks after a Good Friday service at Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg. The comments follow the appointment of an EFF member as Gauteng's finance MEC.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi appointed Economic Freedom Fighters provincial leader Nkululeko Dunga as finance MEC on 1 April 2026. The decision aims to stabilise the coalition government and secure passage of the R179.2 billion budget amid threats from coalition partners. Dunga replaces ANC's Lebogang Maile, who shifts to education.

As local government elections approach, the African National Congress shows little sign of gearing up to retain its power in key municipalities. Internal conflicts and service delivery failures in areas like Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni are overshadowing potential campaign narratives. Analysts suggest these polls could signal further decline for the party ahead of 2029 national elections.
