A new Dragon League at the Peace Arch Curling Club in White Rock has launched, drawing in novice Chinese curlers from the local community. Organized by local enthusiasts, the program aims to introduce the sport in a supportive environment. It runs through the end of March, open to all participants.
The Dragon League kicked off this past weekend at the Peace Arch Curling Club, supported by members of the South Surrey and White Rock Chinese community. Founders Linda Wei, Long Bo, and Mary Lang are leading the effort to bring new players into the sport. John Bogar, the club's marketing and membership coordinator, highlighted the initiative in an email, noting the interest among local Chinese residents familiar with curling.
Linda Wei, who began curling two years ago, shared her enthusiasm: "There are many Chinese people living on the Peninsula who are familiar with curling and interested in the sport. With a bit of effort, we’re now able to introduce them to curling in a welcoming environment." She added, "It’s so great to get out during the winter for a regular activity, and then socialize with so many nice people at the curling club."
Mary Lang, an experienced curler and longtime volunteer at the club, is providing coaching and translation support. She explained the initial challenges: "Many of the new curlers aren’t familiar with walking on ice, so safety was our first lesson to help them gain confidence." Participants were also daunted by the 44-pound granite stones, but Lang observed progress: "It’s been wonderful to see them relax and enjoy themselves as they learn to deliver the rocks down the ice."
The newcomers recognize curling's status as an Olympic sport, with awareness of China's international success and its role as Canada's other national pastime. Wei noted, "More importantly, they see curling as Canada’s other national sport and are proud to take part."
The league is inclusive and will continue until the season's end in late March. For those interested in joining next season starting in September, details are available at peacearchcurling.com.
