New fossil axolotl species identified in Mexico

Researchers have identified a new fossil species of axolotl in Mexico, the first fossil salamander formally described in the country.

Researchers at the Zaragoza School of Advanced Studies at the National Autonomous University of Mexico identified the species in the state of Hidalgo.

The new species has been named Ambystoma quetzalcoatli. It provides evidence that axolotls have inhabited Mexico for millions of years.

This marks the first formal identification of a fossil salamander from the country.

The first documented acoustic record of the song of the Osteocephalus omega frog was made in the municipality of Acevedo in Huila. The finding marks a scientific advance in the Andean Amazon Corridor thanks to community monitoring.

Scientists have identified a previously unknown genus and species of giant salamander from fossils found in Japan more than two decades ago. The creature, named Limnospondylus ajimuensis, lived about 3.5 million years ago and may have grown to 1.1 meters long.

Newly examined fossils indicate that the earliest four-limbed vertebrates developed directly into adults without a larval phase featuring external gills.

Scientists have determined that structures once seen as traces of tiny animals in 540-million-year-old Brazilian rocks are actually fossilized communities of bacteria and algae. The reexamination uses advanced imaging to reveal preserved cells and organic material.
