NMDPRA announces lower Jet A1 price band amid ongoing airline fuel dispute

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has set a new indicative price range for Jet-A1 aviation fuel following the recent airline shutdown threat over high costs. Prices are now N1,760-N1,988 per litre in Lagos and N1,809-N2,037 per litre in Abuja.

This update comes after airlines, via the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON), temporarily suspended a planned nationwide shutdown on April 17 amid disputes over Jet A1 prices they claimed reached N3,300 per litre—figures disputed by NMDPRA at the time as N1,960-N2,800 per litre.

On April 27, following a technical committee meeting on April 24, NMDPRA announced the revised indicative range based on Platts average prices from April 17-23. The lower band addresses persistent cost rises linked to market volatility, including the US-Iran war and operator expenses.

Further measures include directing marketers to sell directly to airlines with a 30-day credit window, and urging coordination with agencies like DPRP, FAAN, NCAA, and the Ministry of Aviation to resolve debts and stabilize supply.

"Following the engagements and current market fundamentals, we believe the indicative end-user price should range between N1,760 and N1,988 per Litre and N1,809 and N2,037 per Litre in Lagos and Abuja respectively," the statement read.
