Olympian Kelly Schafer leads curling clinic in Kindersley

Curlers of all ages gathered at the Kindersley Curling Club for a three-hour clinic led by international Olympian Kelly Schafer. The session focused on technique improvement through drills emphasizing delivery, balance, and shot consistency. Participants ranged from beginners to experienced players seeking to refine their skills.

On Wednesday, the Kindersley Curling Club hosted a special clinic where Swift Current-based curler Kelly Schafer shared her extensive expertise with local athletes. Curlers from young starters to seasoned competitors took to the ice for hands-on instruction in fundamental skills.

Schafer, originally from Scotland, has a distinguished career in curling. She represented her home country at three World Junior Curling Championships from 1999 to 2002. Later, she competed for Great Britain at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin and the 2010 Games in Vancouver. Her achievements include a bronze medal at the 2007 World Women’s Curling Championship and a silver at the 2010 edition.

Since relocating to Canada, Schafer has continued competing at a high level. She has represented Saskatchewan in national events and was a key member of the Robyn Silvernagle rink that claimed the 2023 Saskatchewan Scotties Tournament of Hearts title. Additionally, she secured a Canadian championship as part of the winning team at the 2023 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship held in Swift Current.

During the clinic, Schafer provided personalized feedback to participants while leading group drills aimed at building consistent technique. Organizers highlighted the rarity and value of such opportunities, noting that learning from an Olympian helps develop the sport and motivate the next generation in West Central Saskatchewan.
