Opposition plans impeachment of Gilmar Mendes over complaint against Zema

Opposition lawmakers plan an impeachment request against STF Justice Gilmar Mendes over his criminal complaint against Romeu Zema. The complaint, revealed on Sunday, concerns a video featuring puppets imitating Supreme Court justices and has drawn unexpected support for the Novo party's presidential hopeful.

STF Justice Gilmar Mendes filed a criminal complaint with Justice Alexandre de Moraes requesting Romeu Zema (Novo), former Minas Gerais governor, be investigated in the fake news inquiry. The video depicts puppets representing Gilmar and Dias Toffoli discussing the Master case, referencing the Tayayá resort. Zema posted it last month and reposted it on April 20 after Mônica Bergamo's column revealed the complaint.

Zema's campaign members and even rivals view the action as "a boost" for his presidential bid. Support came from Senator Rogério Marinho (PL-RN), coordinator of Flávio Bolsonaro's campaign, Deputy Nikolas Ferreira (PL-MG), and opposition leader in the Chamber, Cabo Gilberto Silva (PL-PB). A member of Ronaldo Caiado's (PSD-GO) campaign called the complaint an "exaggeration" that Zema could leverage.

In response, opposition leader Cabo Gilberto Silva (PL-PB) will file an impeachment request against Gilmar on Wednesday (22). Moraes forwarded the complaint to the PGR, with proceedings remaining confidential. Zema's team disputes Gilmar's claims of sophisticated professional editing and advanced deep fake mechanisms in the video.
