Pelé's 1958 World Cup final jersey sold for R$ 25 million at auction

The number 10 jersey worn by Pelé in the 1958 World Cup final was sold for US$ 4.9 million, equivalent to R$ 25 million, at an auction held by Sotheby's in New York on Thursday.

The blue uniform was won after ten bids from more than five participants. The piece became the most valuable memorabilia item linked to Pelé and the second most expensive soccer jersey ever sold at auction.

Pelé scored two goals in Brazil's 5-2 victory over Sweden in Stockholm, securing the country's first world title. He remains the youngest player to score in a World Cup final.

The jersey had previously been auctioned in 2004 for 70,505 pounds. The current sale exceeded the value of the shirt worn by Diego Maradona in 1986, which sold for US$ 9.3 million in 2022.
