Pemex has opened an investigation into Virginia Guillén, a long-time employee, over suspicions her resources funded her daughter Mafer's extravagant 15th birthday party that sparked nationwide controversy last month. Director Víctor Rodríguez confirmed the probe amid President Claudia Sheinbaum's zero-tolerance stance on corruption.
Following the viral backlash over María Fernanda 'Mafer' Guerrero's lavish New York-themed quinceañera on March 7 in Villahermosa, Tabasco—which featured high-profile artists and an estimated multimillion-peso cost—Pemex director Víctor Rodríguez announced on April 8 that the company has filed a formal review request against Mafer's mother, Virginia Guillén.
Guillén, a 30-year unionized employee as auxiliar técnico B in Exploration and Production, earns 38,000 pesos monthly. Rodríguez referred the case to the Anti-Corruption Secretariat and internal control body to assess potential removal from her post. President Sheinbaum emphasized during her morning press conference: «No act of corruption will be tolerated, but it is necessary to confirm the information and the origin of the resources.»
Guillén, wife of Tabasco businessman Juan Carlos Guerrero with extensive energy sector ties including Pemex supplier Petroservicios Integrales México (PIMEX), reported no bank accounts or credit cards in her latest asset declaration. However, her 2021 declaration listed properties and a BMW purchased outright for cash.
No probe has been announced against Guerrero himself. TV host Galilea Montijo, who emceed the event, previously defended the family as hardworking.
