Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi sent a letter to Amit Shah on Saturday. He asked whether the home minister approved the use of indiscriminate force, including lethal weapons and tear gas, during the dispersal of a march by student protesters.
The protests on July 20 were part of a larger campaign against alleged irregularities in the NEET examination. Demonstrators marched from Jantar Mantar toward Parliament. Police used lathi charges and tear gas to disperse the crowd.
Gandhi cited injuries to women students and to 19-year-old Sahil Lochab, who he said may lose an eye after being hit by pellet guns. He also asked about the identity of men in plain clothes who were seen beating protesters.
The letter links the unrest to broader issues in the education system and states that the matter will be raised in the upcoming Parliament session. The government has not yet responded to the specific questions raised.
