Red auroras reach extreme heights above Japan

Researchers have found that faint red auroras visible from Japan can extend far higher into the atmosphere than previously thought, even during moderate solar storms.

A study from Hokkaido University and the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology measured the auroras at altitudes of 500 to 800 kilometers. The findings come from observations of five events recorded in Hokkaido between June 2024 and March 2025. Scientists combined satellite data with images taken by citizen observers to map the structures along magnetic field lines.

Northern lights appeared over Sweden and Norway overnight into Saturday. There is still a chance to see them tonight, even in central and southern Sweden, according to aurora expert Calle Bergstrand. More opportunities are expected in the coming days.

Debris from a Chinese Chang Zheng 4B rocket created a luminous trail over Argentine Patagonia at 0:41 a.m. on Saturday, April 4. Hundreds of witnesses in cities like Bariloche, General Roca, and Viedma recorded the event on their phones. Specialists confirmed it as a planned atmospheric reentry with no damage.

Scientists have detected traces of iron-60 in Antarctic ice up to 80,000 years old, showing that the solar system is moving through material from an ancient stellar explosion. The findings come from a study published in Physical Review Letters and point to the Local Interstellar Cloud as the source of the radioactive isotope.
