Rivera hosts final of municipal spelling contest

In the municipality of Rivera, Huila, the final of the Municipal Spelling Contest took place, an initiative by the newspaper LA NACIÓN supported by the local mayor's office. Nine students from primary, basic, and secondary categories were awarded three-month virtual English courses, fostering reading, writing, and proper language use.

The Municipal Spelling Contest in Rivera, Huila, concluded with a ceremony awarding nine winners across primary, basic, and secondary categories. This initiative, driven by the newspaper LA NACIÓN and supported by the Rivera Mayor's Office under Mayor Luis Humberto Alvarado Gómez, aims to encourage writing, reading, and orthography from an early age as essential tools for academic and social development.

The event featured children, youth, and students from various educational institutions, joined by teachers, tutors, and parents. Sponsor KOE – Es hablar inglés provided three-month virtual basic English courses to the winners, enhancing their overall education.

Henry Herrera, KOE's commercial executive, stated: “English has become a necessity to open doors in the job and cultural world. We joined this contest because we believe children and youth should learn to write and speak well, not only in Spanish but also in English.”

Lucerito Montealegre Rivera, Secretary of Finance, highlighted the municipal commitment: “We are proud of the children's and youth's participation. They are all winners because simply reading, writing, and striving to learn is already an achievement.”

Participant Samay Juliana García Losada from Institución Educativa Riverita shared: “I like orthography and English. This contest helped me learn more about my abilities and also my mistakes.”

Fifteen-year-old Martín Alexander Ramos Sánchez, also from Riverita, added: “Participating allowed me to discover that learning in different areas is important, that orthography is not boring but a tool that helps us express ourselves better.”

Parents like Jhon García and grandmothers like María Díaz praised the contest's motivational impact on students. LA NACIÓN reaffirms its role in promoting education through this partnership with the Mayor's Office.

Winners:
- Primary: Samay Juliana García, Jesús Andrés Valbuena Burbano, Iker Santiago Vega.
- Basic: Karol Losada, Victoria Ortiz Ortiz, Jerónimo Andrade Cortés.
- Secondary: Martín Alexander Ramos Sánchez, Steven Palomino Torres, Alejandra Polanco Achicue.
