Rains have caused road closures in Arauca, Casanare and Boyacá, with losses exceeding $300 million according to the Asociación para el Desarrollo Integral del Transporte Terrestre Intermunicipal.
The winter emergency is affecting the mobility of about 2,500 passengers daily on corridors connecting Yopal, Arauca and Boyacá. The Asociación para el Desarrollo Integral del Transporte Terrestre Intermunicipal reported that the closures are already impacting the supply of food, medicines and fuels.
The trade group stated that this situation highlights the historical lag in road infrastructure. Tertiary roads and bridges remain the most vulnerable points in the network in the rural areas of the east of the country.
Various trade groups, including Fedearroz, have warned about the effect of the floods on the agricultural sector in Casanare and Arauca. Land transport remains the main means of connection between municipalities and urban centers in the region.
