Alexander Zverev captured his first Grand Slam title at Roland-Garros on Sunday by defeating Flavio Cobolli in five sets.
The world number three German defeated the Italian 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-7, 6-1 in four hours and 16 minutes on Court Philippe-Chatrier. At age 29, Zverev ends years of waiting after three prior Grand Slam final losses. No German player had won Roland-Garros since the Open Era began in 1968. Zverev becomes the first German Grand Slam winner since Boris Becker at the Australian Open in 1996. The new champion delivered a solid performance despite moments of nerves. He notably dominated the opening and closing sets with authority against a Cobolli who fought back in several exchanges.
