SanDisk samples 332-layer chip for future storage

SanDisk has sampled a new 332-layer chip that could enable drives with up to 512 terabytes of capacity by 2027.

The chip is described as tiny in size. It represents an advance in storage technology from the company.

A drive using the technology could cost more than $300,000. This pricing reflects the scale of the capacity involved.

The sampling marks progress toward higher-density storage solutions expected in coming years.

IBM has developed a prototype computer chip that packs nearly 100 billion transistors into a fingernail-sized device. The 10 by 15 millimetre chip uses a new three-dimensional layering technique to achieve record density.

SanDisk has released a new series of officially licensed NVMe SSDs for the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro consoles. The drives also work with PCs and carry notably high prices amid a global memory shortage.

South Korean chipmakers Samsung and SK Hynix reported combined profits of $59.7 billion for the March 2026 quarter. The figure tops the aggregate earnings of all listed Indian companies in any previous quarter. Strong demand for memory chips tied to artificial intelligence drove the results.
