Gauteng Police Sergeant Fannie Nkosi testified at the Madlanga Commission that Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane, killed alongside rapper Kiernan Forbes (AKA) in Durban in 2023, was Mthakathi Mswazi’s nephew. The statement followed the playing of a video showing the pair being gunned down. Nkosi was involved in the early stages of the murder investigation.
On Friday, 20 March 2026, during Day 82 of the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, Gauteng Police Sergeant Fannie Nkosi testified that Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane was the nephew of Mthakathi Mswazi. This revelation came after the commission played a video of Motsoane and Kiernan Forbes, known as AKA, being gunned down in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, in 2023. Nkosi told Commissioner Sesi Baloyi that he assisted in the early stages of the murder investigation, as the organised crime unit was requested to support KwaZulu-Natal police. Commissioner Baloyi asked: “When you say you were involved, does it mean the docket ended up at the National Office? We were working hand-in-glove with the KZN Police. So it remained a KZN case?” Nkosi confirmed: “That’s correct.” The testimony forms part of Nkosi’s ongoing cross-examination, which continues on Monday. Evidence leader Matthew Chaskalson SC previously asked Nkosi how he obtained footage related to the murders, to which Nkosi replied it was “all over the news.” Nkosi’s appearance at the commission also touched on his links to figures associated with Mswazi Msibi, a late taxi industry leader who died on 7 January 2024. Msibi was prominent in Pretoria taxi structures. Sergeant Nkosi, from the Gauteng Organised Crime Unit, has been questioned over various matters, including his contacts and involvement in other investigations.
