Sonora joins national plan against sexual abuse

Sonora's governor, Alfonso Durazo, announced the state's joining of the Comprehensive Plan against Sexual Abuse promoted by President Claudia Sheinbaum. This commitment aims to strengthen the fight against violence towards women and promote gender equality. The announcement was made on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

During his virtual participation in President Claudia Sheinbaum's morning conference, Sonora Governor Alfonso Durazo ratified the state's commitment to the Comprehensive Plan against Sexual Abuse. "Ratificar que desde Sonora nos sumamos sin regateos a las acciones y estrategias para combatir la violencia contra las mujeres. Nos sumamos con todo compromiso al amplio programa de su gobierno", assured the Sonoran leader.

The plan aims to standardize the crime of sexual abuse nationwide, streamline complaints, and strengthen justice by centering victims. Its pillars include classifying abuse as a serious crime at the national level, sensitization campaigns to encourage reporting, specialized training for justice personnel, and interinstitutional collaboration. It also promotes cultural change to break entrenched behaviors that violate women's rights.

Durazo presented the Specialized Center for Gender-Focused Training, the first of its kind in Mexico, aligning with the national plan. This center will professionalize officials, civil society, and the private sector in gender perspective, human rights, and violence prevention.

As part of the National Commitment for Life, Happiness, and Respect for Women, signed by Durazo and the 31 governors, a permanent campaign for equality and against violence will be implemented. In coordination with local prosecutor's offices and courts, no complaint will be dismissed, and the number 079 option 1 will be available for victim follow-up. Other measures include monthly school activities on the 25th to promote respect between boys and girls, coordination tables in mobility for prevention, creation of safe paths in public spaces, and certified training for public servants with a gender perspective.
