South Africa scales down repatriation operations amid declining arrivals

The Inter-Ministerial Committee on Migration announced on 26 July that it has processed more than 68,000 foreign nationals for repatriation or deportation since June and will reduce operations at the Musina centre from 1 August.

Committee chairperson Mmamaloko Kubayi provided the update at a media briefing in Pretoria. She said 68,138 foreign nationals had been deported or voluntarily repatriated between 14 June and 24 July, with most processed through the Musina Temporary Repatriation Processing Centre. The Border Management Authority separately handled 72,906 repatriations through ports of entry between 7 June and 14 July.

Kubayi warned against vigilantism and stated that only state authorities may enforce immigration laws. She condemned groups impersonating officials and noted that seven people had been arrested in Polokwane for such activities. The committee also reported that dedicated immigration courts finalised 28,736 matters between April and June.

International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola addressed concerns raised by Ghana at the same briefing. He dismissed calls for African Union debate as cheap political point-scoring and urged focus on root causes such as economic challenges and governance issues across the continent. The government will consult remaining metropolitan municipalities before finalising a framework on migration-related issues in cities.

Following nationwide anti-migrant protests on 30 June 2026, South Africa has repatriated or deported more than 53,000 foreign nationals, mostly Malawians, Zimbabweans and Mozambicans. Processing continues at the Temporary Repatriation Processing Centre near Musina.

The Inter-Ministerial Committee on Migration held a briefing on 14 June detailing enforcement actions following President Cyril Ramaphosa’s five-point plan on illegal immigration. Over 2,745 foreign nationals have been repatriated so far. The government warned against vigilantism as anti-migrant groups set a 30 June deadline for undocumented migrants to leave.

Thousands of undocumented immigrants are arriving at the Musina repatriation centre in Limpopo for processing and repatriation. Several buses reached the centre early on Friday morning from various parts of South Africa.

The Lindela Repatriation Centre turned away two buses carrying Malawian nationals on 6 July after reaching full capacity. This occurred as foreign nationals fled recent anti-foreigner unrest across South Africa.

Hundreds of migrants have arrived at makeshift repatriation sites in Durban, fleeing violence in their communities. The facilities are at capacity with some sleeping outside without basic services.

Ghana has requested that the African Union discuss xenophobic attacks in South Africa at its mid-year summit in Egypt. South African International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola said the move gives Pretoria a chance to highlight migration challenges.
