South Africa’s swimmers have improved on their medals tally from the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, reaching 13 medals with more than a session remaining at the 2026 edition in Glasgow. Para swimmers Nathan Hendricks and Danicka Vyncke added two silver medals on day five.
South Africa’s swimmers have dominated the nation’s Commonwealth Games campaign in Glasgow. At the halfway mark they accounted for all 11 medals won by the team so far, with three gold, three silver and five bronze.
Para swimmer Nathan Hendricks won South Africa’s first medal with gold in the men’s S13 100 metres freestyle. On day five he took silver in the 50 metres freestyle behind Scotland’s Stephen Clegg, while Danicka Vyncke claimed silver in the women’s S13 50 metres freestyle behind Australia’s Kirralee Hayes.
Other notable performances include Pieter Coetzé winning gold in the 200 metres backstroke in a Games record of 1:54.22 and gold in the 50 metres backstroke. Erin Gallagher secured bronze in the 100 metres butterfly, her second individual medal, and Chad le Clos earned his 19th Commonwealth medal in the 4x100 metres freestyle relay.
