Srinagar court issues non-bailable warrant against Farooq Abdullah in cricket scam

A court in Srinagar has issued a non-bailable warrant against National Conference president Farooq Abdullah in connection with the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association scam. The warrant came after Abdullah's counsel declined to have him appear virtually. The matter is listed for further proceedings on March 30.

On March 12, 2026, the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Srinagar issued a non-bailable warrant against Dr. Farooq Abdullah in the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) scam case. The court's order noted that counsel for Dr. Abdullah was given the option to ensure the accused's presence through virtual mode.

However, the counsel did not consent and stated that the accused could neither appear physically nor virtually before the court. The court rejected the application for exemption and directed the office to issue a non-bailable warrant.

On March 2, the court held that there were prima facie offences under Sections 120-B, 406, and 409 of the Ranbir Penal Code against the accused, including Dr. Abdullah. It directed the framing of charges and fixed March 12 for recording statements of approvers.

Officials indicated that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released funds amounting to ₹113.67 crore to the JKCA from 2002-03 up to December 2011. Allegations include a variation of around ₹10 crore in the balance sheets for the financial years 2007-08, 2008-09, and 2009-10.

Dr. Abdullah served as president of the JKCA from 2001 to 2011. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a chargesheet against the accused under the mentioned sections of the Ranbir Penal Code.
