The Magpies dominated the first half, with Sven Botman hitting the post and later the crossbar before suffering a head injury that forced his substitution for Malick Thiaw. However, they failed to extend their advantage and produced a poor second-half performance, as noted by manager Eddie Howe in his post-match comments to Sky Sports: “Painful, tough afternoon for us. Positive start, I thought when we scored we would go on and dominate but we never capitalised on that momentum. The first half fizzed out and second half we were second best. I didn’t like our performance. Technically we were poor.”
