Svantesson: Moderates plan 70 billion kronor in savings

The Moderates have presented 70 billion kronor in savings to fund reforms in the next mandate period without tax increases. Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson identifies bureaucracy, aid and benefits as areas for cuts.

According to the proposal a waste commission will be appointed directly after the election to identify further savings over one year. The Moderates want to review the Swedish Migration Agency’s appropriations, reduce costs per inmate in prisons and tighten time limits for unemployment benefits. The party counts on savings within government agencies, public procurement and reduced fraud in the welfare system. In total the proposals amount to 71 billion kronor, of which six billion from a stricter work-first approach. Social Democrat Ardalan Shekarabi criticises the proposal and claims it amounts to dismantling the security systems. Svantesson stresses that the savings must not affect welfare or defence.
