Swedish Defense Forces launched two missions with JAS 39 Gripen jets on Friday to intercept two Russian fighter planes near Swedish airspace over the Baltic Sea. Danish aircraft also participated in one of the operations.
The two Russian planes were of the types Su-24 and Su-34. The incidents occurred minutes apart in the southern Baltic Sea south of Ronneby and the northern part north of Gotland.
No Swedish airspace was violated. Swedish and Danish combat aircraft followed the planes until they were assessed to be at a safe distance.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson wrote on X that the recurring Russian behavior is serious. Vice Admiral Ewa Skoog Haslum said the actions threaten territorial integrity and security.
Hanna Heurlin at the Swedish Armed Forces stated that the security situation remains serious and that readiness has been strengthened.
