Tropical depression Wilma makes landfall twice in Eastern Samar

Tropical Depression Wilma made two landfalls in Eastern Samar on December 6, 2025, bringing moderate to heavy rains and strong winds to parts of the Visayas and southern Luzon. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) raised Signal No. 1 over several areas, warning of possible floods and landslides. The system is expected to weaken as it moves westward.

Tropical Depression Wilma, the 23rd cyclone of 2025 and the first in December, struck Eastern Samar twice late on Saturday, December 6. Its first landfall occurred at 10:50 p.m. in Hilabaan Island, Dolores, followed by a second at 11:10 p.m. in Oras, according to PAGASA.

As of 1 a.m. on Sunday, December 7, Wilma lingered near Oras, moving west-northwest with maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour and gusts up to 55 kph. By 8 a.m., it was over the coastal waters of Almagro, Samar, with gusts reported up to 60 kph and strong winds extending 150 kilometers from the center, moving at 15 kph west-northwestward.

PAGASA forecasts Wilma to cross the Visayas on Sunday before emerging over the Sulu Sea and reaching northern Palawan by Monday morning, December 8. However, the northeast monsoon may cause it to weaken into a low-pressure area, as tropical cyclones rely on warm air.

Moderate to heavy rainfall of 50-100 millimeters is expected in at least nine provinces from Saturday evening to Sunday evening, including Romblon, Sorsogon, Masbate, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Aklan, Capiz, Iloilo, and Antique. On Sunday evening to Monday, Palawan faces similar rains. Floods and landslides remain risks.

Signal No. 1, indicating minimal to minor wind impacts, covers wide areas in Luzon and the Visayas, such as Sorsogon, Masbate (including Ticao and Burias Islands), Romblon, southern Oriental and Occidental Mindoro, northern Palawan including islands, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Samar, Biliran, northern and central Leyte, northern Cebu including islands, northern Negros Oriental and Occidental, Guimaras, Iloilo, Capiz, Aklan, and northern and central Antique including Caluya Islands.

Sea travel is hazardous, with gale warnings for northern and eastern Luzon seaboards expecting waves up to 5 meters. Additionally, shear line effects from the northeast monsoon and easterlies will bring heavy rains to southern Luzon provinces like Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, and Catanduanes (100-200 mm), persisting into northern Luzon by Monday.
