True Padel expands Sunderland centre to regional record size

True Padel is set to become the largest padel facility in the North East by expanding its Sunderland site into an adjacent unit at Wessington Retail Park. The growth will add four new courts and physiotherapy services, pushing the total space beyond 33,000 square feet. Completion is expected in spring, strengthening ties with property partner Adderstone Group.

True Padel Sunderland, currently housed in a 23,000 square foot unit at Adderstone's Wessington Retail Park, features five doubles courts, two singles courts, a café, lounge, and function areas. The expansion into the neighboring space will increase the facility to over 33,000 square feet, incorporating four additional courts and dedicated areas for specialist padel physiotherapy.

This development positions the centre as the biggest padel hub in the North East and among the largest in the UK. It highlights the ongoing collaboration between True Padel and Adderstone Group, a major regional property investor and developer.

Ian Baggett, founder and chief executive of Adderstone Group and a former GB seniors' tennis player, praised the initiative: “Adam and Alex are a real class act and quietly building one of the best padel businesses in the UK from a North East base. Their backhands are still a bit erratic so I’ve told them that I’m prepared to settle the first rent review on the back of a three-set-match.”

Adam Carr, director of True Padel and co-founder with his brother Alex, emphasized the partnership's value: “We couldn’t have asked for a better partner than Adderstone. They are passionate about supporting our expansion and get padel and its potential. This latest development will take us up to 20 indoor courts in the North East, with more plans in the pipeline. It’s so rewarding for everyone involved to be introducing literally thousands of people in communities all over the region to the fastest growing new sport in the world.”

The project, due for completion in spring, underscores padel's rising popularity and True Padel's role in regional sports growth.
