Two dead in wrong-way crash on houston's katy freeway

A wrong-way BMW collided head-on with a Tesla Cybertruck on Houston's I-10 Katy Freeway early Tuesday, killing both drivers and shutting down eastbound lanes. The Cybertruck driver was identified as 38-year-old Jamar Champ, a former North Dakota State University football player and estranged husband of reality TV star Masika Kalysha. The incident highlights ongoing concerns about wrong-way drivers in the area.

The crash occurred just after midnight on October 28, 2025, near the Washington Avenue and Westcott Street exit in the 6600 block of the Katy Freeway. Houston Police Department received calls around 12:05 a.m. about a vehicle traveling the wrong way. A four-door BMW sedan was heading westbound in the eastbound lanes when it slammed head-on into a Tesla Cybertruck traveling toward downtown.

The impact caused the BMW to burst into flames, and its driver, a male whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Cybertruck was sent into a nearby 18-wheeler, but its driver remained uninjured. Jamar Champ, 38, the Cybertruck driver, was taken to a local hospital in critical condition and later died from his injuries.

HPD Sgt. Rebecca Dallas stated, "We believe at this time that the BMW was headed westbound in the eastbound lanes going the wrong direction." Investigators suspect the BMW entered the freeway at the Washington/Westcott exit, despite multiple "Do Not Enter" and "Wrong Way" signs. An autopsy will determine if impairment was a factor.

Local resident Truitt Maxwell, who lives nearby, described wrong-way driving as a recurring issue. He told KHOU 11 that he recorded video weeks earlier of another driver going the wrong way from a gas station and said, "There’s a fatality waiting to happen." Maxwell has reported concerns about signage and visibility to 311. The Texas Department of Transportation has installed warning signs and red reflectors, but such incidents persist. Harris County has recorded 111 wrong-way deaths since 2015, with 233 people injured in wrong-way crashes last year.

Champ's family confirmed his identity to KHOU 11, sharing photos of him with the Cybertruck and remembering him as a devoted father and friend. Social media posts identified him as Masika Kalysha's estranged husband; she requested prayers for herself and her children following the news. Champ had played as a wide receiver for North Dakota State University in 2005, redshirting in 2006 before leaving the team.
