1. FC Union Berlin has parted ways with head coach Steffen Baumgart after a 1:3 defeat to Heidenheim. U19 coach Marie-Louise Eta takes over on an interim basis until the end of the season, becoming the first woman to coach a men's Bundesliga team. The club sits 11th, seven points clear of the relegation playoff spot.
- FC Union Berlin announced late Saturday that head coach Steffen Baumgart, along with assistants Danilo de Souza and Kevin McKenna, have been dismissed. The move came after a 1:3 loss to 1. FC Heidenheim. Profifußball Geschäftsführer Horst Heldt explained: "We are playing an absolutely disappointing second half of the season [...] and urgently need points to secure league survival." He added: "Two wins from 14 games since the winter break do not give us the conviction that a turnaround is possible in the current setup."
Baumgart took over in early January 2025 and had his contract extended recently. After the first half, Union sat ninth with 23 points, but managed only nine more in the return leg.
Marie-Louise Eta, 34, steps in until the end of the season. She previously served as co-coach from November 2023 to May 2024 and will lead the women's Bundesliga team from summer. "I am pleased that the club has entrusted me with this demanding task. [...] I am convinced that we will secure the decisive points with the team," Eta said. With five games left, Union leads 16th by seven points.
