US launches Tech Corps for AI promotion abroad

The Peace Corps has introduced the Tech Corps initiative to send volunteers with AI expertise to foreign countries. This program aims to apply American AI solutions to local challenges in areas like agriculture and health. It supports the broader American AI Exports Program established by executive order.

The Peace Corps, a government agency known for sending volunteers abroad, has announced Tech Corps as its newest program. It targets STEM graduates and professionals experienced in artificial intelligence, recruiting them for assignments in host countries that participate in the Peace Corps network.

This initiative ties into the American AI Exports Program, launched last year through an executive order by President Trump. The order seeks to strengthen the United States' influence in the international AI sector. Tech Corps volunteers will focus on deploying AI to tackle problems in agriculture, education, health, and economic development.

Assignments range from 12 to 27 months and can be in-person or virtual. Participants receive housing, healthcare, a living stipend, and a volunteer service award for overseas placements. Richard E. Swarttz, acting director of the Peace Corps, stated in a press release that the volunteers will be "building technical capacity, supporting AI adoption across critical use cases and addressing barriers to last-mile AI implementation."

While the program emphasizes benefits for host nations, it also positions the US advantageously in the global AI landscape, amid rising competition from countries like China. The announcement highlights efforts to expand American technological leadership through international collaboration.
