The announcement revives speculation about Walker's posthumous involvement in the series' conclusion.
The Fast & Furious saga, which began as a street-racing film in 2001, has grown into a global phenomenon, grossing over $7 billion worldwide across ten mainline entries and one spin-off, according to The Hollywood Reporter. 'Fast Forever' will directly follow 2023's 'Fast X,' directed by Louis Leterrier, though Universal has not confirmed if he will return or revealed full cast and plot details.
Vin Diesel, who plays franchise lead Dominic Toretto, shared the title and date in an Instagram post on Saturday, featuring a nostalgic photo of himself alongside Paul Walker. "No one said the road would be easy... but it's ours. One that has defined us and become our legacy... And a legacy... lasts Forever. March 17th 2028! FAST FOREVER," Diesel wrote.
Walker portrayed Brian O'Conner until his death in a 2013 car crash during production of 'Furious 7.' His potential role in the finale has fueled fan speculation. At last year's 'Fuel Fest' event, organized by Walker's brother Cody, Diesel promised a return to the series' roots in street racing and car culture. "That is what you're going to get in the finale," he told attendees, explicitly teasing a Dom and Brian reunion.
Originally slated for 2025, the project faced production delays, pushing its release back three years. Diesel has described 'Fast Forever' as a "celebration of the incredible family we've built" and the definitive end to the core storyline, marking the end of an era for the high-octane series.
