In the original pilot of the TV series Justified, Walton Goggins' character Boyd Crowder was scripted to die at the end. Producers decided to keep him alive after positive test screenings highlighted Goggins' performance and his chemistry with Timothy Olyphant. This change elevated Crowder to a series regular and contributed to the show's six-season run.
The FX series Justified, which aired from 2010 to 2015, centered on U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens, played by Timothy Olyphant, pursuing criminals in Kentucky. Boyd Crowder, portrayed by Walton Goggins, served as his primary antagonist and former coal-mining associate. According to series creator Graham Yost in a 2015 NPR interview, the initial pilot script ended with Raylan shooting and killing Boyd before the credits.
However, after testing the episode, the production team was impressed by Goggins' acting and the dynamic between him and Olyphant. Yost recalled, "And then we tested the show and we had all just fallen in love with Walton [Goggins] and the chemistry between Walton and Tim [Olyphant], so we decided to keep him alive." This decision reshaped Boyd's arc, transforming him from a one-off villain into a cunning schemer constantly devising new plans.
Yost attributed much of the series' longevity to retaining Goggins, stating, "Getting [Walton] to come back, that gave us six years." Starting as a recurring guest in season 1, Goggins was promoted to series regular in season 2.
Despite their on-screen rivalry fueling the show's energy, Goggins and Olyphant experienced real-life tensions by the series' conclusion, as detailed in Peter Biskind's book Pandora's Box: How Guts, Guile, and Greed Upended TV. The actors reportedly stopped speaking, with Goggins explaining, "We were so deep into these people we were playing, and they were so polar opposite at this point in the story ... I think we were both obsessed with our own points of view, just carrying the weight of this conflict."
Olyphant reflected, "I adored working with Walt from the jump, but these actors, they're a pain in the a**." He noted differences in their approaches: Olyphant would consult the writers' room on his character's direction, while Goggins firmly asserted Boyd's actions, complicating the storylines.
Crowder made a comeback in the 2023 limited series Justified: City Primeval. The actors later reconciled during a chance encounter in Thailand, where Goggins was filming The White Lotus and Olyphant was working on Alien: Earth. Any future collaborations remain uncertain.
