A woman in her 60s has been detained on suspicion of poisoning four colleagues on the children's ward at Akademiska Hospital in Uppsala. The poisonings occurred in late October and early November, with victims suffering severe symptoms requiring intensive care. One victim cannot return to work due to the physical and psychological toll.
Four employees on the children's ward at Akademiska Hospital in Uppsala fell ill over a period of more than a week in late October and early November 2025. The victims showed similar symptoms, including critically low potassium levels, and required intensive care for several days. Police suspect water bottles were spiked with caffeine powder, according to reports to Expressen.
On December 5, a woman in her 60s was arrested during a meeting with her boss at the hospital. She was detained in absentia at 2:40 p.m. and arrested shortly after, suspected of four counts of attempted murder. Following the weekend investigation, prosecutor Emma Häggström requested detention on probable cause, but Uppsala District Court detained her as reasonably suspected of four counts of aggravated assault on December 8.
The woman is employed on the same ward and has worked with the victims. On social media, she has expressed criticism of vaccines and certain medications. The prosecutor confirms her employment but does not comment on motive or the suspected substance. 'We are taking many investigative measures, including interviews and analyses,' Häggström says.
One victim, who was treated in intensive care for several days, has been deeply affected. 'It has impacted her both physically and psychologically. She has not been able to return to work,' says victim representative Sunita Memetovic. The victim seeks answers: 'What is the cause? How did it happen? And why?' Hospital security has been tightened with locked doors and security guards. Staff are shocked and suspicious, according to Anna-Karin Agvald, chair of the Uppland General Medical Association: 'Our members wonder why anyone would want to do this.' The suspect denies the charges, her lawyer Stefan Wallin states.
