Xinjiang grows as tourist destination for Hongkongers

Hong Kong student Angel Lau Yin-kwan visited Xinjiang in early July and praised its infrastructure and scenery during a study tour.

Hong Kong student Angel Lau Yin-kwan, 16, joined a seven-day northern Xinjiang learning tour in early July organised by public broadcaster RTHK under the Solar Project. She had wanted to visit the region because it is the birthplace of her favourite actress, Dilraba Dilmurat.

Before the trip, Lau expected mostly grassland and horse transport. She was surprised by the 700-metre-long Guozigou Bridge suspended 200 metres above a valley and the views of Sayram Lake, Xinjiang’s highest and largest alpine lake. Lau also made a leather keychain while learning about local carving heritage.

“I wish to spend a month or longer learning more about the region,” Lau said. She added that study tours help broaden horizons and make new friends. Tourism leaders in Hong Kong and mainland China now see Xinjiang as an emerging destination for visitors seeking its natural scenery, history and culture.
