At Tallängens school in Kumla municipality, 100 students—nearly half the school—have fallen ill with influenza simultaneously. This outbreak coincides with the start of Sweden's 2025 flu season, dominated by the so-called K-variant. Transmission is expected to rise in the coming weeks.

In Kumla municipality, Tallängens school has been hit by a major flu outbreak. 100 students, representing nearly half of the school's pupils, have become ill with influenza at the same time. Municipal operations manager Viktoria Holmgren reports that 45 percent of the students have been absent.

"45 percent of the students have been absent," says Viktoria Holmgren.

This outbreak occurs as Sweden's 2025 flu season gets underway. According to epidemiologist AnnaSara Carnahan at the Public Health Agency, transmission is active and expected to increase over the coming weeks. The so-called "K-variant" appears to be dominating the season.

"The spread could be larger this year," says AnnaSara Carnahan.

Both events were reported on December 1, 2025. The outbreak at Tallängens school illustrates the challenges that can arise during flu season, as the virus spreads quickly in enclosed environments like schools.
