Boston Blue originated from different series pitch

The upcoming Blue Bloods spin-off Boston Blue started as a pitch for an original series before CBS suggested centering it on Danny Reagan.

Showrunners Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis pitched a story about a Los Angeles law enforcement professional relocating to Boston to reunite with his estranged cop son. CBS then proposed changing the lead character to Danny Reagan from Blue Bloods. Sonnier recalled the network note:

NBC has greenlit four pilots to series for the 2026-27 television season. The network also scrapped four other projects, including a drama starring Emily Deschanel. The decisions follow an evaluation of eight pilots developed for consideration.

Donnie Wahlberg, star of the CBS spin-off Boston Blue, revealed in a recent interview that the show films primarily in Toronto despite its Massachusetts setting. He offered to take a 50% pay cut to shoot in Boston but was turned down due to high costs. Distractions from fans and city noise also played a role.

The upcoming Blue Bloods spin-off Boston Blue features a weekly Shabbat dinner instead of the original series' Sunday meal. Co-showrunner Brandon Sonnier based the change on his own experiences as a Black convert to Judaism married to a white Jewish woman.

NYPD Blue encountered fierce opposition from affiliate stations and advocacy groups months before its pilot aired on ABC in 1993. The protests centered on anticipated language, violence, and sexual content. Despite the backlash, the show drew strong viewership from the start.
