Botafogo beats Chapecoense 1-0 in Copa do Brasil

Botafogo defeated Chapecoense 1-0 on Tuesday night (21/4) in the first leg of the Copa do Brasil fifth phase at Estádio Nilton Santos. Alex Telles scored the winning goal in stoppage time, securing Franclim Carvalho's first home win. The team remains unbeaten under the Portuguese coach.

Botafogo struggled to break down Chapecoense's defense but secured a narrow win with a stoppage-time goal from Alex Telles. The left-back, who came off the bench, headed in a cross from Vitinho after a right-wing move.

Both teams had chances. Júnior Santos and Kadir nearly scored in the first half, hitting the post and missing. Montoro also struck the woodwork for Botafogo, while Ênio and Marcinho threatened for Chapecoense.

Franclim Carvalho, unbeaten since taking charge, celebrated his first home win at Estádio Nilton Santos but demanded more from his players. "It was little for me," the Portuguese coach said. "I think we have a lot to improve, a lot. This goes through the collective process. Of course we're not satisfied being one of the best attacks and one of the worst defenses."

With the lead, Botafogo will decide advancement to the round of 16 on May 14 at Arena Condá, Chapecoense's home. First, they face Internacional on Saturday (25/4) at Arena BRB Mané Garrincha in Brasília.
