Cali opens call for citizens to plant trees and reduce heat islands

The Corporación Autónoma Regional del Valle del Cauca, CVC, launched a call for citizens to propose sidewalks and road dividers where native trees can be planted to combat heat islands in Cali.

The initiative is developed in partnership with Fundación Agua Viva, Funagua. Interested residents must send their contact details, exact address and a photograph of the site to WhatsApp 318 398 3729.

Each proposed site must have a sidewalk or divider wider than 1.20 meters. Technical teams will review viability considering public utility networks and nearby infrastructure stability.

The CVC will prioritize native dry tropical forest species such as guayacán amarillo, guayacán azul, chicalá, gualanday, burilico, tutumo, casco de buey and samán. These interventions can reduce surface temperature by up to 10 degrees centigrade.

Studies by the Alcaldía de Cali and the CVC indicate that communes 3, 4, 5, 8 and 13 register the highest surface temperatures in the city.
