British counterterrorism police have taken over the probe into the murder of former politician Ann Widdecombe following new evidence.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced the development on social media. She said she had spoken to the head of Counter Terrorism Policing and that officers were now leading the case after fresh information emerged.
Police launched a murder investigation on Friday after Widdecombe was found dead at her home in Haytor on the edge of Dartmoor National Park the previous day. The 78-year-old sustained serious injuries.
A 28-year-old man arrested on Saturday in South Yorkshire on suspicion of murder has since been rearrested on suspicion of terrorism-related offences. Officers are examining multiple lines of inquiry to determine the motive.
Mahmood said she would provide further details to Parliament later on Monday.
