Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones confirmed the firing of defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus on Tuesday, as reported by NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero. Eberflus, who joined the team in the offseason after a three-year stint as head coach of the Bears, oversaw a defense that ranked 30th in total yards allowed at 377.0 per game and dead last in points surrendered at 30.1 during the 2025 season. This marked a sharp decline from the prior year, despite an offense that finished seventh in points per game and second in yards per game.
Jones issued a statement praising Eberflus personally but underscoring the necessity of adjustment: "Having known Matt Eberflus for decades now, we have tremendous respect and appreciation for him as a coach and a person. After reviewing and discussing the results of our defensive performance this season, though, it was clear that change is needed. This is the first step in that process and we will continue that review as it applies to reaching our much higher expectations."
The season began with significant upheaval on defense. Star linebacker Micah Parsons sat out training camp amid contract talks before being traded to the Green Bay Packers just before Week 1, depriving Eberflus of a key asset for his new scheme. The Cowboys started 3-5-1, allowing 30.8 points per game in that stretch. A midseason trade for Quinnen Williams from the Jets sparked a three-game win streak, including victories over the reigning AFC and NFC champions, pushing Dallas above .500 entering Week 14.
However, defensive issues resurfaced with a 44-point loss to the Detroit Lions, followed by 34-point defeats to the Minnesota Vikings and Los Angeles Chargers, eliminating postseason hopes. The unit recorded only 35 sacks and 12 takeaways, resulting in a -9 turnover differential. Cornerback Trevon Diggs was waived late in the year. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer now seeks a new coordinator to bolster the defense alongside the high-powered offense.
