DPWH confirms death of Sorsogon district exec

The Department of Public Works and Highways confirmed the death of Larry Reyes, an administrative officer in Sorsogon's 1st District Engineering Office. The agency appealed for public restraint from speculating on the circumstances, describing it as a private matter unrelated to departmental issues. Reports on social media suggested suicide, but the family has requested privacy.

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) issued a statement on November 14, 2025, confirming the passing of Engr. Larry Reyes, who served as an administrative officer and long-time chairman of the bids and awards committee at the Sorsogon 1st District Engineering Office (DEO).

"The entire Department of Public Works and Highways family is mourning the passing of our colleague, Engr. Larry Reyes," the DPWH said in its official release. The agency emphasized that the death is "a profoundly private and personal matter and not related to any of the agency's issues."

The statement came amid circulating reports on social media and some news outlets claiming Reyes died by suicide. "While there is much speculation and unverified reports on social media regarding his circumstances, Engr. Reyes’ family has requested the public and media for privacy and necessary space to grieve his deep loss away from public scrutiny, especially during this difficult time," the DPWH added.

It urged respect for the family's wishes: "The DPWH urges everyone to honor the family’s need for privacy and refrain from discussing or perpetuating unconfirmed reports." The department committed to supporting the family and its team during this mourning period, thanking the public for compassion.

The Sorsogon 1st DEO, led by district engineer Priscilla Jebulan, has continued its procurement activities and contract awards in recent weeks, unaffected by ongoing scrutiny over flood control projects.
