Drive-By Truckers reunite with Jason Isbell on Colbert

Drive-By Truckers reunited with former member Jason Isbell for their first official performance together in 18 years on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The group performed 'Hell No, I Ain't Happy' to celebrate the reissue of their 2003 album Decoration Day. Patterson Hood highlighted their strong friendship and the album's importance in a recent statement.

Performance Overview

On the December 2, 2025, episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Drive-By Truckers brought out Jason Isbell, who was a key guitarist and songwriter for the band from 2001 to 2007. They performed 'Hell No, I Ain't Happy,' a track from the band's 2003 album Decoration Day, which was recently reissued as The Definitive Decoration Day. This edition includes bonus tracks like a new remix and a 2022 live recording.

Background and Relationship

Isbell left the band in 2007, but the members have maintained a close friendship. Patterson Hood, Drive-By Truckers' singer, stated: 'We have always remained friends with Jason, and honestly, he and I are closer now than ever. I consider Decoration Day to be our masterpiece, and he was such an integral part of that album that it’s wonderful that he’s able to join us in celebrating this release.' This marks the first announced appearance together in nearly 20 years, though they have collaborated sporadically since Isbell's departure.

Past Collaborations

  • In 2014, Isbell joined Hood and guitarist Mike Cooley for a show in Alabama.
  • In 2017, he performed 'Heathens' from Decoration Day with the band in Nashville.
  • In 2021, Isbell sat in at his Shoals Fest in Alabama, playing on 'Heathens' and singing 'The Day John Henry Died.'

While this reunion celebrates the album's legacy, no full band comeback is planned. Isbell has announced 2026 tour dates with his group, the 400 Unit.
