Egypt uncovers 18 ancient tombs at Marina El Alamein archaeological site

An Egyptian archaeological mission has uncovered 18 ancient tombs at the Marina El Alamein site on Egypt's northwestern Mediterranean coast.

The discovery includes sarcophagi, surface burials and various artefacts. It brings the total number of tombs identified at the site since 1986 to 44.

Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Sherif Fathy called the find an important scientific achievement. The ministry plans to continue excavation and development work to open the site to visitors.

The project includes a visitor centre, electric vehicle routes and a museum storage facility, with completion expected in the first half of next year. Archaeologists also recovered 24 gold funerary pieces and a sealed 2.5-metre granite sarcophagus.
