Extratropical cyclone causes destruction in SC and PR and advances to SP

An extratropical cyclone struck Santa Catarina and Paraná intensely on Friday (7), felling trees and unroofing houses, and is now beginning to affect western São Paulo. The São Paulo Civil Defense issued a severe cellphone alert for heavy rains and strong wind gusts. Authorities forecast severe conditions through Saturday (8).

The extratropical cyclone formed in the South region and strongly impacted Santa Catarina and Paraná on Friday (November 7, 2025). In Santa Catarina, the strongest wind gusts reached 108 km/h in western municipalities such as Itá, Itapiranga, Jorge Lacerda, Xanxerê, and Chapecó, with rainfall accumulations exceeding 100 mm in 24 hours. Residents reported hail on social media, along with fallen trees and unroofed houses. The Santa Catarina Civil Defense suspects a tornado or microexplosion, where winds descend rapidly from clouds causing destruction below.

In Paraná, damages were reported in Rio Bonito do Iguaçu, Candói, and Porto Barreiro, where several houses were destroyed, with similar suspicions of a tornado. In São Paulo, heavy rains have already been recorded in the regions of Presidente Prudente and Araçatuba.

Around 19:40, the São Paulo Civil Defense sent a severe alert via the Cell Broadcast system to cellphones in the state's eastern strip, including Greater São Paulo, Vale do Paraíba, Vale do Ribeira, Itapeva, Sorocaba, northern coast, southern coast, Baixada Santista, and Campinas. The message warned: "Conditions for rain and strong wind gusts in the coming hours and throughout Saturday, 8. If necessary, seek shelter immediately." The agency advises avoiding open areas and paying extra attention to fragile structures, trees, and power lines.

Forecasts indicate gusts up to 115 km/h on the northern coast, 110 km/h in Baixada Santista, Vale do Ribeira, and Itapeva, 100 km/h in the São Paulo metropolitan area, Campinas, Sorocaba, Vale do Paraíba, and Serra da Mantiqueira, and 95 km/h in other interior areas. The cyclone may cause intense rains, isolated hail, frequent lightning, and microexplosions, especially Saturday morning, with moderate to heavy rains across the state. A prior alert was issued on Thursday (6) regarding the system's formation off the Southeast coast.
