Fire in Kano claims four family members, one escapes

A devastating fire in Kano State, Nigeria, killed four members of a family early on Wednesday, leaving residents in mourning. The blaze engulfed a two-bedroom apartment in Kundila Housing Estate, Tarauni Local Council. A 12-year-old boy was the sole survivor, rescued by firefighters.

Residents of Kundila Housing Estate in Tarauni Local Council, Kano State, were plunged into grief following a fire that erupted in the early hours of Wednesday, November 20, 2025. The incident claimed the lives of Shodandi, his wife Rafi’a, and their two young children, Mardiya and 18-month-old Yusira, who were all burnt to death in their two-bedroom apartment.

A 12-year-old boy named Aminu, the eldest child of the family, escaped unharmed after being rescued by the Kano State Fire Service. A witness described the tragedy as terrifying, noting it occurred suddenly in the predawn hours.

Saminu Yusif, spokesperson for the Kano Fire Service, confirmed the details and stated that the fire was brought under control by their team. Preliminary investigations suggest the blaze may have started from a mosquito coil left burning in the apartment. Yusif offered condolences to the bereaved family and urged the public to exercise caution with fire sources as the dry Harmattan season approaches.

This incident follows a similar tragedy last week, when over 500 shops were destroyed by fire at Shuwaki Market in Gari Local Council, attributed to the carelessness of some individuals residing nearby. The Kano Fire Service continues to respond to such emergencies amid rising risks during the seasonal shift.
