IG Kanja gazettes five new police stations across five counties

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has gazetted five new police stations across Kajiado, Wajir, Kisumu, Migori, and Meru counties. The notice, dated March 27, was issued under section 40(1) of the National Police Service Act. The stations aim to address insecurity in vulnerable areas.

Inspector General Douglas Kanja formally designated five establishments as police stations in a gazette notice dated Friday, March 27. The action was taken under section 40(1) of the National Police Service Act to strengthen police presence.

"In exercise of the powers conferred by section 40 (1) of the National Police Service Act, The Inspector General Designate the particulars of which are set out in the Schedule hereto to be a Station for the purpose of this Act," Kanja stated in the notice.

The stations include Gataka in Kajiado North Sub-County, Otonglo in Kisumu West constituency, Mabera in Kuria West Sub-County of Migori, Lagbogol in Wajir West, and Thuura in Imenti East of Meru.

These locations have long faced banditry, insecurity, and inter-community clashes. Recent bandit attacks in Imenti East, for example, have caused livestock losses for residents.

Prior to gazetting, these operated as police posts with limited capacity. They now hold full legal status, enabling arrests, custody, reporting, and other core functions to improve response times and local security coordination.

The Sameri Park police station in Kitengela, Kajiado County, has been without electricity and water for two years since its establishment, forcing officers to use candles at night. This situation has made their work difficult, and locals are questioning a Sh5 million renovation done in 2022. The area police commander has acknowledged the power cut and stated it is the county government's responsibility to pay the bill.
