Interior minister Reul does not rule out another term

North Rhine-Westphalia's Interior Minister Herbert Reul has indicated he might extend his term. The 73-year-old stated in an interview that he would defer to voters and Premier Hendrik Wüst's decision. The next state elections are scheduled for spring 2027.

Herbert Reul, North Rhine-Westphalia's interior minister and a CDU member, recently told the Rheinische Post that he does not rule out serving another term. The 73-year-old emphasized: «If the voters decide that and Hendrik Wüst wants it too, then I will decide whether I do it». He added: «I believe it's not forbidden yet to work longer.»

Reul has held the position of interior minister since 2017. Prior to that, he served 13 years as a CDU member of the European Parliament. Currently, Premier Hendrik Wüst leads a black-green coalition government in the state, comprising the CDU and Greens.

Reul's statements come ahead of the 2027 state election, set to occur in spring as scheduled. Whether Reul will run and take a role in a possible new government depends on the election outcome and Wüst's stance. His position highlights his willingness to remain politically active despite his age.
