Italy is set to appoint Andrea Pirlo as its new national team coach. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Pirlo has accepted a verbal proposal from the Italian Football Federation and will be confirmed as Gennaro Gattuso’s successor in the coming days.

The federation had approached Brazil boss Carlo Ancelotti and former Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola for the role, but both turned it down. Pirlo, who won the World Cup with Italy in 2006, is currently in charge of UAE side Dubai United.

Italy return to competitive action on September 25 when they face Belgium in the UEFA Nations League. The team has not advanced beyond the group stage of a World Cup since 2006 and has failed to qualify for the last three tournaments.
