Kaizer Chiefs secure late draw against Zamalek in cup match

Kaizer Chiefs fought back with a dramatic injury-time equaliser to earn a 1-1 draw against Egypt's Zamalek in their CAF Confederation Cup Group D clash in Polokwane. The South African side had conceded early but capitalised on a goalkeeping error to salvage a point after a tough opening to the tournament.

Kaizer Chiefs faced a challenging start in their CAF Confederation Cup Group D encounter against Zamalek at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on November 29, 2025. The match kicked off poorly for the home side, who conceded in the third minute through a goal by Zamalek's Jaziri, stemming from a defensive mistake by Chiefs' Angolan defender Inacio Miguel.

Chiefs entered the game needing points following a loss to Egyptian club Al Masry in their opening fixture the previous Sunday. The first half brought further difficulties when forward Gaston Sirino suffered an injury in the 17th minute, forcing an early substitution.

In the second half, Zamalek came close to extending their lead early on, but Chiefs' defence cleared the attempt off the line. The game remained tense until stoppage time, when a blunder by Zamalek's goalkeeper allowed Chiefs' defender Dylan Solomons to set up the equaliser. The goal came as an own goal by Zamalek's Mohamed Sobhy in the 90th +6th minute, levelling the score at 1-1.

The full-time result provided some relief for Chiefs, who shared a tweet celebrating the draw: '90 + 8’| #CHI 1 : 1 #ZSC Full-time score: Kaizer Chiefs 1 (Mohamed Sobhy – 90’+6′ OG) : Zamalek SC (Jaziri 3′) 1 #Amakhosi4Life #TotalEnergiesCAFCC #KCOneAfrica'.

This point keeps Chiefs in contention in the group, though they must improve defensively to advance in the competition.
