KDE Linux reports May progress on build system and security

KDE Linux has advanced its development with infrastructure changes and security improvements during May. Contributor work focused on a new build process and package reductions.

Nate Graham released a progress report detailing work on the Linux distribution. Hadi Chokr updated the build system to use the kde-builder tool instead of Arch packages and mkosi. The changes make builds match developer workflows, increase distro independence and speed up processes via better caching. Security updates removed the Zen kernel, insecure modules, unused packages and AUR reliance. Other updates include automatic Flatpak app installation, replacement of KWalletManager with KeepSecret and .7z support in Ark. Testing improvements using openQA are also underway.

Canonical has launched Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, codenamed Resolute Raccoon, featuring Linux kernel 7.0 and a shift to Wayland across variants. Official flavors including Kubuntu and Lubuntu accompany the main release with updated desktops and hardware support. The LTS version promises five years of updates until April 2031.

Developers have released Linux kernel 7.0, featuring improvements for Intel and AMD hardware, enhanced storage handling, and the removal of the experimental label from Rust support. Linus Torvalds announced the update, which is not a long-term support version. The release includes preparations for upcoming CPUs and GPUs, alongside self-healing filesystem capabilities.
